"Movie Marquees"
Showing on our outdoor Marquee
Images and icons reminiscent of old time marquee movie posters.
1. Felix the cat. (Starred in early silent cartoons. Before Disney.) Still as popular as ever. 2. KING OF THE ROCKETMEN - Serial, 1949. Starred Tristram Coffin (as the Rocketman) and Mae Clarke (the lady in the painting. Coffin played a villain in many serials, but, here, was the hero. 3. THEM! - 1954 science fiction movie about giant ants created by atomic bomb testing. The film featured James Arness, who later played sheriff Matt Dillon in the 1960s Gunsmoke TV series. 4. Bela Lugosi- Dracula, 1931. Typecast and played many horror roles. A Hungarian, he did not learn to speak English fluently which hampered his choice of movie roles. He ended up making pictures for so called "poverty row" studios. He became addicted to pain killers and could not shake the addiction. Played brilliantly by Martin Landau in his Oscar winning performance of Lugosi in Tim Burton's 1994 classic Ed Wood. Also a classic song by 80's proto goth rock band Bauhaus. 5. Gorilla and Damsel in Distress - Stock serial and B movie schlock. Whenever the action slows down, call for the gorilla. 6. Huntz Hall - One of the Bowery boys. Played a character called "Satch". (Anyone who can recall this character gets a special nod from the B movie academy awards. Anyone who can't gets a hickey.)
