Oil Painting Workshop: Working with an Underpainting

In this 4 week workshop, students will learn about the advantages to creating a “grisaille” or underpainting for their oil painting projects. This historical method of painting involves rendering your subject in tones of gray, allowing it to dry, then applying glazes of colour on top. Techniques like scumbling, dragging and impasto are then employed into the wet glaze to bring the picture to a finish. Learn how to realistically render an array of textures such as metal, glass, wood and more. This timeless technique was favoured by such Masters as Rembrandt, Ruebens and Titian, to name a few. Emphasis will also be placed on drawing, values, colour theory and use of mediums.
